Healthy Weight Loss – Artificial Sweeteners Destroy Weight Loss

Researchers at Purdue University’s Ingestive Behavior Research Center conducted a study that showed that eating (or drinking) artificial sweeteners could actually lead to weight and fat gain. They began the study wanting to find out what would happen to rats fed glucose (a low-calorie sweetener) versus rats fed saccharin (the no-calorie sweetener in diet soda). One group of rats was given yogurt sweetened with glucose and another group of rats ate yogurt with saccharin. The rats were checked before and after the study to monitor any changes in weight, amount of total body fat, and how much they ate at each meal.

The rats that ate the saccharin actually gained weight, gained more fat, and didn’t cut back on snacking later than the rats that ate glucose. The study authors think the findings were caused by saccharin interfering with the body’s ability to recognize that sweet food carries a lot of calories. Without this recognition, the rat’s body would be unable to achieve any kind of healthy weight loss.

The mice that ate the glucose knew they had just eaten a large, filling meal and compensated by eating less during that meal and less at subsequent meals of the day. The saccharin rats were unable to tell that they just ate a high-calorie meal, ate too much at that meal, and didn’t cut back afterward. The artificial sugar basically confused their body’s digestive system.

It was also found that the body temperature of rats that ate saccharin increased less before a meal than the temperature of other rats. Metabolism increases before a meal to help a body process food for fuel. Healthy weight loss depends on a higher metabolism. The rats that ate the artificial sweetener had their metabolisms lowered, slowing the digestion of food.

Although the study was conducted on rats, it is already known that the level of obesity in humans has increased at the same time as the increase in the use of artificial sweeteners. It’s difficult for researchers to predict exactly how the consistent use of these sweeteners will affect humans because different people react to them in different ways.

Other artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame can have the same effect. Further studies would be needed to know if other sweeteners react differently from saccharin. But people can still achieve healthy weight loss by cutting calories and avoiding artificial sweeteners. If you crave something sweet to eat, it’s actually best to eat something with a small amount of glucose or table sugar.
