Carb Cycling – Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret Diet?
What is the best low-carb diet? Of all the fad diets out there (Atkins, South Beach etc) which one could be the most effective? After spending a lot of time researching nutrition and fitness, I came across a diet that, by asking around, the people at my gym swear by. And according to my fitness instructor, Hollywood swears by it, too. It’s a new twist on the old low-carb, high-protein diet and an advanced fat-loss technique called “carb cycling.” It has also been called “carb cycling”, “Zig, Zag diet” and “Hi-low” diet.
How does it work
Our bodies are conditioned to respond to hunger. This means that when we eat less our body thinks there will be less to burn in the future, so it goes into starvation mode. In starvation mode, our bodies will burn less and less because they think there is nothing left to burn. This is why traditional low-carb dieters reach a plateau when they follow a low-carb diet for some time.
Carbohydrate Cycling (I like to call it CC) is the most effective way to trick our bodies into not going into starvation mode. On a CC diet, you cut back on carbs for a few days, then increase them again before your body figures out what’s going on! CC is based on the concept of alternating low carb days with high carb days instead of keeping the carbs low all the time. The great thing about this diet is that it takes advantage of the fat loss benefits of a low carb diet, but eliminates all the low carb side effects! It keeps your metabolism at a high rate and prevents your body from going into starvation mode.
The game plan
Low carbs should be maxed out for three days in a row and then full up on day four. After the carb-up on day four, your energy stays high and your metabolism gets a boost by burning fat rapidly. On my low days, I eat my carbs in the first two or three meals (including snacks) and I eat few carbs. (Half a cup of brown rice) After 4pm I eat high protein meals with only fibrous carbohydrates (salads, greens, etc.)
On my best day, I just eat whatever I want (still no candy and soda). This is where I eat a lot of starchy carbs like french fries, Chinese fried rice, mashed potatoes with gravy, etc. Not only does it fill me up with needed carbs, it also gives me a feeling of reward after three days of low carbs. After losing 20lbs and dropping 11 points on my body fat percentage, I’m truly convinced that this really is the fastest method to lose weight and also the one that seems the easiest. =)
