In fact, 58 adult deaths of people following these strict diets were reported in 1977, according to the FDA.

You would think such events would permanently put them out of favor, but thanks to their various incarnations they keep coming back in different forms and of course, they receive endless interest from people desperate to lose weight or get ripped fast. One company received more than a million calls in one day after an Oprah Winfrey show in the 1980s when she let slip the name of the liquid diet plan she was using at the time, according to The New York Times.

100% liquid diets are generally not found in too many places these days, rather they usually involve the participant having to eat at least full whole food throughout the day, but are interspersed with canned liquid drinks.

The effect of following them these days initially is that people can lose weight and sometimes even get ripped fast. However, the part that isn’t true is that you can’t get the same results by just eating a whole-food, whole foods diet, you can. The other part is that following a liquid diet doesn’t teach you how to maintain weight healthily for life and in the long run these fad diets often don’t work to full capacity, and here’s why.

Some of these diets also fall into the category of low-calorie diets, meaning there is a brief drop of between 800 and 1000 calories in your daily energy requirement.

What does this mean and why is it bad for weight loss, surely such a deficit would be good for weight loss? Unfortunately this is completely wrong and it is a trap that far too many people fall into and which can ruin their attempts to lose weight. Here because:

1) Diets this low in calories will cause your body to go into a “hunger response”. When your body is severely reduced in calories, it reacts by trying to conserve the remaining energy it has and holding onto it to keep itself alive. It basically does this by slowing down the body’s metabolic rate and preparing itself to put on weight as soon as it gets the chance. Both of these of course are completely against weight loss.

2) Liquid diets do not teach the participant good eating habits for life and only offer quick fixes. This means that once the diet breaks down, they tend to pack on at least all the weight! They can also develop unhealthy attitudes towards foods that make them suffer more in the long run.

3) Often the liquid dietary supplement provides energy in the form of high sugar ingredients such as corn syrup. This is the highly refined sugar that is being blamed in the United States for its high level of obesity in the general population. Do yourself a favor and at least check the ingredients list! Healthy foods are not.

4) Even if you happen to come across a healthy liquid dietary supplement, do you really think it’s doing something that complete whole food can’t do? It is not! All of the ingredients can be found in everyday foods, they do not contain any miracle weight loss formulas, although that is often what their marketing would have you believe!

The only place a liquid dietary supplement could play is to provide you with calories at a time when you are in a rush and don’t have time to prepare a proper meal and with some advance planning that is required it can be avoided. Keep in mind, however, that even the most expensive powdered liquid drinks will never be as nutritious or well fortified with vitamins as regular food—we still can’t beat mother nature on that score. In fact, eating whole foods has a weight loss benefit in that it actually requires energy from the body to digest food that a liquid diet doesn’t require, thus aiding the calorie burning process.
