Ideally, your diet will be high in protein, but low in carbohydrates and sugar. Some people count calories, and it’s important to keep up with the number of calories you’re consuming and burning, because no matter what type of diet you’re on, a pound still consists of 3,500 calories. If you consume 3,500 more calories than your body burns, you’ll gain a pound. If you take in 3,500 fewer calories than your body burns, you’ll lose a pound.
Don’t be surprised if your doctor recommends eating six small meals throughout the day, instead of the usual three meals. The idea is to keep your body from going hungry. When your body becomes hungry, you are more likely to overeat or eat the wrong types of food. If you eat every two to three hours throughout the day and plan those meals ahead of time, you’ll never feel overly hungry and lose weight.
Exercise is also important. If you do nothing else, walk 30 minutes every day. If you are really out of shape, you may not be able to walk fast. Walk at a pace that is not only comfortable for you, but one that allows you to walk for the full 30 minutes. As your body gets fitter, you can participate in other types of exercise and also start walking further and faster.
