And often, it’s not the cheating that sabotages you, it’s the fact that you don’t quickly return to compliance or pick up where you left off. I also believe that how you cheat is more important than whether you cheat. So, in the following article, I’ll offer some tips on how to deal with the urge to cheat and what to do if you decide to go ahead and give in.
Know that it is normal: I find many people who are considering Medifast think that the highly successful never cheat and are always in perfect compliance. I don’t think this is the case. I believe that those who are successful stick with the diet until they get the desired results. And that means if and when they cheat, they get back up and move on. It’s completely normal to have bad days. But the key is to not let those days turn into several days urging you to quit.
Try to distract yourself before you act: Let’s say you have a sudden craving for a piece of dark chocolate and you just ate your lean, green meal. Another thing I will try is to wear new jeans which look very nice due to the weight loss. This can sometimes work to free you from any desire to cheat. You can also try journaling. Sometimes, just describing the food and how you feel about it will be enough to free you to take your attention away from it. Finally, you can post on one of the forums on the company’s website and ask for advice or just someone to listen. Sometimes, just receiving friendly encouragement will keep you going.
If these things fail, look for safe alternatives within the diet: Let’s say you’ve tried all of the above and still want that fudge, your next step would be to try and find something on the Medifast menu that works as an alternative. I’m thinking especially of brownies or soft serve. You can also try one of the Medifast-approved snacks like jelly or popsicles.
If you’re going to cheat, move on to the next meal right away: I understand that sometimes that coveted food calls your name and nothing else will satisfy you. If this is the case, try eating a small portion of your food rather than having a colossal session of pork. It’s my personal opinion that you might as well savor it if you’re going to cheat. Why do it if it won’t be fun? Once you’ve made up your mind, give yourself that small, temporary pleasure and leave it behind. Don’t waste your time or emotional energy feeling guilty or worrying about it. What’s done is done. Now is the time to move forward. Go right back to the diet for the next meal and keep going. Because honestly, the real risk is letting this derail you and kick you off the diet. So it’s imperative that you move forward and come back into compliance without making a big deal about it.
